Conveyor Safety: Rope Pull Switches, Interlocks and Safety Relays

Conveyors run for long distances, often with open access points. That is why safety devices along the line must work every day: emergency stop rope switches, belt monitoring, guard door interlocks and the safety relays that evaluate their signals. When one of these devices is damaged, worn or discontinued, it must be replaced with a suitable original or equivalent part, not bypassed.

VBN Vertriebs GmbH supplies original safety switches and safety technology and safety relays and monitoring relays from Offenburg, Germany. Send us the data of your device and we pass it to the manufacturer, who confirms the matching part. You receive a quote with price, lead time and country of origin.

Safety devices on a typical conveyor line

Emergency stop rope pull switches. Installed along the conveyor so that a person can stop the line from any point by pulling the rope.
Belt misalignment and belt rip monitoring. Detect a belt running off track or damaged.
Zero-speed and speed monitoring. Detect a stopped or slipping belt.
Interlock switches on guards and access doors. Stop the drive when a guard is opened.
Safety relays. Evaluate the signals from the switches and switch off the drive safely.
Emergency stop buttons at drive stations and control points.

What to check on a rope pull switch

Rope pull switches are exposed to dust, moisture, vibration and impact. When you replace one, compare the following data with the old device:

Maximum rope length and the pull force needed to trip the switch.
Number and type of contacts (normally closed, normally open) and their ratings.
Latching function and the way the switch is reset.
Housing material and protection class for your environment.
Cable entries, mounting holes and installation position.
Indicator or lamp, if fitted.

The rope itself, the tensioning springs and the end fittings are wear parts. Check them during every inspection and replace damaged parts together with the switch.

Interlock switches on guards

Interlock switches monitor whether a guard is closed. Some have a separate actuator, some have a locking function that keeps the guard closed until the machine has stopped. For a replacement you need the type designation, the actuator type, the contact configuration, the supply voltage if there is one, and the mounting dimensions. Requirements differ from country to country, so your safety officer or the manufacturer should confirm which device suits your risk assessment and your local rules.

Safety relays

A safety relay is the link between the switch and the drive. When you replace one, compare supply voltage, number of safety contacts, input type, reset type (manual or automatic) and the approved safety level shown in the data sheet. Do not replace a safety relay by a standard relay or a PLC output unless the manufacturer and your safety assessment allow it. Read the wiring diagram carefully: a wrong connection can disable the protective function.

Steps for your request

Photograph the nameplate or marking of the device.
Note the type designation and part number.
Send a photo of the device installed on the conveyor.
State supply voltage, number of contacts and rope length, where relevant.
Tell us the quantity and the delivery country.

Important note

This page is general information and does not replace a risk assessment or the instructions of the manufacturer. Safety devices must be installed, tested and maintained by qualified personnel. Never bridge or bypass a safety device to keep a line running.

Inspection and testing

Safety devices only protect people when they are checked regularly. Typical points for a conveyor are:

Pull the rope at several points along the full length and confirm that the drive stops and that the switch latches.
Check rope tension, rope guides, springs and end fittings.
Check housings, seals and cable glands for damage and water.
Check the alignment of guard actuators and the condition of interlock switches.
Reset the system only after the cause is found, and record the result of each test.

Follow the inspection intervals defined in your own safety rules and in the manufacturer instructions.

Spare safety parts to keep on site

If a rope switch or a relay fails, the line stays stopped until a replacement arrives. Many plants therefore keep one spare of each type used on the conveyor: a rope pull switch, spare rope, springs and end fittings, an interlock actuator and a safety relay. Ask us for a quote for the complete set.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a rope pull switch with a different type?

Only if the manufacturer confirms that it is suitable for your application and that rope length, pull force and contacts match.

The device is discontinued. What now?

The manufacturer normally names a successor. Compare the mounting and electrical data before ordering. Read more about discontinued industrial spare parts.

Do you supply complete sets?

Yes, we can quote switches, relays and accessories together. Send us your list.

How fast can you answer?

We reply within 24 hours. Lead times are stated in the quote.

For the rest of the line, see our overview of conveyor belt components and spare parts and the conveyor package with chains, geared motors and belts. Sensors for position and speed monitoring are on our sensor page.
